Abstract

Although living in the most digitalized era in human history, there's been a remarkable resurgence in analog photography in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic. This artistic medium originated in the early 19th century, faced a decline with the advent of digital cameras in the late 20th century, and is currently undergoing a renaissance in the early 21st century. We, coming from distinct regions of the globe, have observed this growth in popularity in our local communities, respectively. As designers and film photographers ourselves, we saw an opportunity to modernize the touchpoints involved in the interactions between the photographer and photo development lab where they go to buy, develop, scan, and print the film and images.

Through our research, we uncovered opportunities to make film photography more accessible to everyone while also empowering people to learn, grow, and even find work opportunities as a photographer. Grainspace, our project, does exactly that. It's designed to bring the nostalgic charm of film photography into the digital age, providing a unified community for learning, inspiration, and professional networking.

Grainspace's development followed a thorough process involving investigation, research, analysis, ideation, testing, and iteration. This report encapsulates the journey from investigation to execution of the alpha version prototype where photographers have a dedicated space to get inspired by others, build a body of work, connect with photo development labs, and even find work opportunities.

Ultimately this project is our love letter to film photography 💙
